This one is a mystery tunnel. We don’t know where this one goes. We don’t know who did it. We don’t know why.

For 12 seasons, we have watched the Lega brothers dig, search, and chase clues on Oak Island, meaning there could be some actual treasure just below us—and we’re going to find that out this year. But the truth is, we haven’t been getting the full story.

Marty Lega’s daughter has finally broken her silence and addressed the rumors about what really happens on Oak Island, and it is definitely not what we expected.

The Beginning of an Obsession

Marty Lega’s daughter, Maddie Lega, first revealed how this whole Oak Island obsession really started. It was not some random idea that popped into their heads overnight. According to her, this fascination with Oak Island runs deep—literally and figuratively.

Maddie revealed that it all goes back to 1965 when a young Rick Lega found an article in Reader’s Digest. The article was about a mysterious treasure buried on Oak Island, a small landmass off the coast of Nova Scotia. The article talked about the famous Money Pit, a supposedly bottomless hole that had swallowed up treasure hunters, their money, and even their lives for over 200 years.

And that was it. One article. One story. And Rick was hooked for life. He became obsessed with the legend, reading everything he could about Oak Island. The mystery of hidden treasures, booby traps, and unexplained artifacts kept pulling him in.

But the thing is—he was not alone. Over time, Marty got caught up in the mystery too. While Marty was more of the practical, business-minded one, even he could not ignore the intrigue surrounding Oak Island. He saw it as a challenge, something worth investigating.

Then came the early 2000s. That’s when the brothers finally decided to do something about this lifelong fascination. They joined forces with Craig Tester, a longtime friend and expert in drilling and engineering. With their combined skills and deep pockets, they set out to uncover what so many before them had failed to find.

In 2006, they officially bought a 50% stake in Oak Island Tours Incorporation, which gave them partial ownership of the island. That was the beginning of what would soon become one of the longest-running treasure hunts in modern history.

Since then, they have spent over a decade and a half digging, searching, and unraveling more questions than answers. And despite everything—including the failed digs, the wild theories, and the setbacks—they are still here.

Even after 12 seasons, they are not ready to walk away. But this also means they encountered many secrets and mysteries during those 12 seasons.

Revealing the Secrets

At the heart of everything is the Money Pit—a deep, booby-trapped hole first discovered in 1795 by three teenagers. They stumbled upon a depression in the ground and started digging, finding wooden platforms every 10 feet, almost as if someone had intentionally created layers to protect whatever was at the bottom.

But just as they thought they were getting closer, the pit flooded with water. This stopped them in their tracks, and that’s been the case ever since. Every attempt to dig deeper has been met with sudden flooding, collapses, or dead ends.

But modern technology has helped the Legas uncover traces of gold, silver, and even strange fragments of parchment—suggesting that something valuable was buried there at some point. Whether it is still there or not—that’s the real question.

As the brothers kept digging, new theories began to emerge. Some point to the Knights Templar as the ones who originally hid something on Oak Island. The Templars were a secretive medieval order with enormous wealth, and when they were forced into hiding in the 14th century, some believe they fled to North America—bringing their riches and possibly even the Holy Grail with them.

The discovery of a lead cross on Oak Island in 2017, which dates back to the Templar era, has only fueled this idea further.

But that’s not the only clue pointing to a medieval presence. There is also Nolan’s Cross—a strange pattern of five large boulders perfectly arranged in the shape of a Christian cross. Maybe this is a marker left behind by someone who wanted to guide future seekers to the treasure.

If the Templars didn’t do it, maybe it was the Vikings. After all, they were in North America 500 years before Columbus, and evidence of Viking settlements has been found in Newfoundland—not far from Oak Island. It is possible that they used the island as a hiding place for treasure or even something more significant.

The Legas have found old wooden structures, iron artifacts, and even traces of what could be Norse craftsmanship. But nothing definitively links the Vikings to the site.

And then, there is the theory that the treasure is not from medieval Europe at all—but rather from Spanish ships sailing in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Spanish controlled vast amounts of gold and silver from the Americas, but their ships were constantly under attack from pirates. It is possible that a Spanish crew, trying to escape capture, stopped at Oak Island to bury their fortune—hoping to return for it later.

Some of the metal found underground seems to support this idea. Traces of gold and silver have seeped into the water over time, hinting that there is more hidden deep below.

But whether it is pirate loot or Spanish treasure, no one knows for sure.
